Every
day an average of 20 American children are hospitalized for injuries caused by
firearms. Another 3,000 die every year before they get to the emergency room.
For people ages 15 to 19 firearm injuries are the major cause of death after
car crashes. –USA Today.
Leah
Barrett of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence will address the question: “What
can we do?”
NYAGV was established in 1993 by
mothers galvanized by the senseless shooting death of a teacher in Prospect
Park. After the Long Island Railroad massacre in December 1993, a Nassau County
chapter was started. In late 1996, a Westchester County chapter was formed in
memory of an Eastchester police officer killed in the line of duty. In the fall
of 1999 a Suffolk County chapter of New Yorker Against Gun Violence came into
existence.
