Erev Oscar Night In Review

from Scott Ash - Chair of the Fund Raising Committee
Check out the kippah on Oscar!!

And the winner is …. KSS!
Erev Oscar a success!

Many thanks to all who came out for Erev Oscar night on March 1st. There was a good crowd, great food and lots of movie-focused fun. Plus, we raised more than $1300 for the shul!

The evening got off to a good start thanks to the evening’s emcee Billy Crystal-nikoff (aka Zack Murdock). He gave us all his perspective on movies, America and politics fresh from his having been at the Sochi Olympics.

While greeting old and new friends, we all took in the decorations. Cliff Broffman and Barbara Feder-Murdock transformed the sanctuary with stars in honor of each of this year’s Oscar nominees, movie-themed centerpieces, and an 8-foot tall Oscar statuette complete with yarmulke. The look of the room was completed with Oscar nominated movie posters on loan from Cinema Arts; thanks go out to Abby Pariser for making that happen.

Folks enjoyed another delicious KSS event thanks to the food provided by our own Julie Barkan. While eating and circulating, we all bellied up to the KSS bar. It was well staffed, organized and supplied thanks to Margaret and Martin Roche. Jane Kunstler, Cliff Broffman, Bob Kersch and others provided additional help at the bar. At the end of the evening, Abby Pariser made sure that dessert featured cake and fruit, and Ileen Koenig contributed fabulous Oscar-themed chocolates.

As part of the evening’s entertainment, there was a Movie Quote quiz featuring 10 famous quotes from films throughout the years. Howard Globus took home the prize for the most correct answers: film historian Robert Osborne’s authorized history of Oscar’s first 85 years. There was also a raffle of a dual membership at the Cinema Arts Centre won by Scott Ash; the proceeds went to the shul. Finally, towards the end of the evening, people could participate in a 50/50 Oscar pool to predict who won take home the statuettes the following evening, and Steve Siegler read the tea leaves best.

Once again, KSS proved that it can put on fun and unique home-grown entertainment. Many thanks and praise go out to all the members of the Fundraising Committee for doing so much work to organize, promote and make the evening a success. Who knows? Maybe this will be the start of a KSS tradition.

All we need to make the next event as successful or even more so is you!
